The Brinell method is preferably applied to cast iron, unhardened steel, and light metals. Its use is restricted to materials having a Brinell hardness of max. 400 HB since otherwise the penetrator (steel ball) might be deformed. A regular pyramid having a square basis and smoothed off diamond point is pressed in the material to be tested under a load F. The produced impression is projected onto a focusing screen and the diagonals of the impression are measured by means of the measuring equipment.
